However, he sees that she imagines herself in love with the good-looking Christian de Neuvillette and wants Cyrano to take them back together again.

Putting to one side his own love, Cyrano offers his powers of appearance to Christian to give a hand and support in winning back Roxane. Although their friendship is outnumbered, famished, and facing almost definite death, Roxane receives a letter everyday which was signed with Christian's name. Charmingly drawn by these writing, Roxane dares to compel through the enemies' lines to get to her Christian's side. When he saw the power that Cyrano's letters had over Roxane, he finally understood that it is Cyrano whom she really loves. He is adamant that Cyrano should tell Roxane the truth and flees the scene. Before Cyrano could tell Roxane the secret, Christian is mortally wounded.

After Christian's death Roxane goes to reside in a convent and for fifteen years it has been Cyrano's practice to call every Saturday afternoon at three o'clock. In spite of numerous enemies and hopeless poverty his gay and unshakable spirit shines into the world at these meetings. One Saturday, as he goes on his way to visit Roxane, one of his enemies drops a log from a nearby window causing it to crash unto his head and breaking his skull. He conceals his wound from Roxane, but begs to be permitted to read Christian's last letter which she have in her heart always. Only in the darkness he reads it through with certainty Roxane realizes that he was the author and that all the way through these years it has been Cyrano that she cherished and loved.
