Unlike Sesame Street, Avenue Q was more like a show containing some explicit contents that it opens adult topics such as pornography, racism, homosexuality, and other topics of the same field. The characters that are not in puppets connect and link to the puppets, to a certain extent than to the actors that are holding them. The puppets directly speak to each other and not to the actor puppeteers. A puppet cast may be performed by more than one of the actor puppeteer during the sequence and development of the performance.

The puppets of this show are very much alike of the Sesame Street in terms of appearances, but not alike when we talk of their characters. The story is made up of many characters. One of them is Princeton which was the one looking for his purpose in life, which was also the one having in love with Kate. Kate Monster was the one wretched from love difficulties, looking for a school that are open for monsters, and was a kindergarten assistant. Nicky on the other side was the good-hearted idler or loafer who is living together with Rod. Rod was the Republican investment banker but at the same time was also a gay Bert-parody. Brian was the one who was very much engaged with Christmas Eve, which was a Therapist from Japan. The Bad Idea Bears were a twosome of delightful and delectable but sinister teddy bear-like appearances who are open to dig up to perform reckless and negligent acts and endeavors, that the one in yellow is the girl and the one in blue is the boy. Another character, Trekkie Monster is a cookie monster-parody that is very much addicted to pornography on the net, as Lucy T. Slut was the vindictive slutty night-club singer. Mrs. Thistletwat was the elderly boss of Kate and was a Kindergarten teacher and Ricky was the one who looks exactly like Nicky, only a gay Earnie-parodie and more muscular.
