Altar Boyz is

The performance of the group, its location and venue are directly addressed to the audience, on where it's going to take place. There are several songs performed by Altar Boyz and with matched choreographed dancing, done in the style of contemporary boy bands. The singing and dancing represents several scenes that concern the origin of the group, as well as the demons and strength of each member, as part of the musical concert.

Most of the lines and the lyrics of the music of the musical are susceptible of both satirical and humorous interpretations. The performers however, do not acknowledge the double-meanings caught in the lines and lyrics of their performances, a common thing with satire.

The lyrics and music of the show were written by Michael Patrick Walker and Gary Adler. The musical's book by Kevin Del Aguila based from the idea of Mark Kessler and Ken Davenport.

From the production history of the Christian boy band, The Altar Boyz, the musical had it opening at the New York Musical Theater Festival or NYMF in September 2004 in the Puerto Rican Traveling Theater or the 47th Street Theater. 'G.O.D.'s' pre-recorded role was performed by Marc Kudisch. Stafford Arima directed the musical show with the choreography of Christopher Gatelli.

After several production previews, Altar Boyz opened Off-Broadway on March 1, 2005 in Dodger Stages at Stage 4 which is now known as the New World Stages. The cast in this production still comprised of the one in NYMF except for Mathew's role was then played by Scott Porter rather than Cheyenne Jackson and Shadoe Stevens for the pre-recorded role of G.O.D.
