Wisconsin Badgers: A Brief History

The Wisconsin Badgers are the athletic teams representing the University of Wisconsin-Madison. They participate in NCAA Division I level and play many sports such as football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, ice hockey, tennis, swimming, cross country, wrestling, golf, track and field, and softball. The Badgers compete in the Big Ten Conference in almost all the sports.

The Wisconsin state was earlier nicknamed as the 'Badger State' as many prospectors who had come to the state looking for minerals had to 'live like badgers' in some tunnels that were burrowed into hillsides. Thus the athletic teams were also named as Wisconsin Badgers. The team's mascot is Buckingham U. Badger or simply called as Bucky Badger. Their football team has achieved lot of fame and success in recent years. They were among the top teams in the Big Ten since the early 1990s. Then under Coach Barry Alvarez, the Badgers won 3 Big Ten Championships and 3 Rose Bowls too.
