Washington Huskies: A Brief Biography

The Washington Huskies are renowned athletic teams representing the University of Washington. The Huskies compete in the NCAA Division I-A and the Pacific Ten Conference. They have enviable record in football and rowing. They also play various other sports including basketball, cross country, swimming, soccer, tennis, track, baseball and golf.

The Washington Huskies played their first football game in 1889. From 1907 to 1917, they remained unbeaten in 63 consecutive games, which is an NCAA Division I-A record. In 1975, Don James became head coach and transformed the team into a national power. Huskies went on to win the Rose Bowl in 1977 and Orange Bowl in 1984. But it is the 1991 team which is considered as the best Washington Husky football team. They remained victorious, defeating opponents by an average score of 42-9 in regular season. Huskies have also won National Championship in 1960 and in 1991. The Washington Huskies also gained international fame when their Rowing team won the first gold medal at 1936 Summer Olympics
