History of the Tennessee Volunteers

Tennessee Volunteers are the well known athletic teams representing the University of Tennessee located at Knoxville. Tennessee Volunteers football team is popularly known as The Vols. The Volunteers play in the NCAA division I and are the member of the Southeastern Conference. University of Tennessee has separate athletic departments to look after the women's and men's sports.

The Volunteers played their first football game on November 21, 1891 against the Sewanee team. Though they lost the game by 24-0, they later started growing into a strong team. Alabama team is the main rival of the Vols and they compete annually in the 'Third Saturday' during the month of October. In the year 1998, The Volunteers won the National Championship for football in the NCAA Division I-A.
