Stanford Cardinals: A Brief Biography

The Stanford Cardinal represents the athletic members of the popular Stanford University. 'Cardinal' is actually referring to one of the official colors of the university that is why it is in the singular form. It was in March 19, 1891 when Stanford made it against Cal during the first Big Game. The Stanford players did not have a collective nickname or moniker then, but the local newspapers put the name 'cardinal' on their headlines. Also, Stanford was not given the 'official' moniker until 1930 when the Indians were adopted. Regardless of the true origin of the nickname of the team, the sportswriters and editors widely accepted 'Cardinal' and have been using it until now.
