About the Wildcats

The Arizona Wildcats football team started their game at the University of Arizona in 1899. Their nickname at that time was the "Varsity". This name was retained by the team members till the 1914 season. The 1914 season was the season when they added the term "Wildcats" to their name. The Arizona football team is one of the older teams in American football history.

The major successes of the team was achieved during the 1990's. The coach of the team during this period was Dick Tomey. He had applied a "Desert Swarm" defense technique and some tough, hard to defeat tactics for the players that worked wonders for the team. 1993 was a record breaking year for them, as they had their first 10-win season in this year. The Miami team was defeated by the Wildcats to the amazement of fans and football followers. The Wildcats met the Miami Hurricanes in the Fiesta Bowl. And the score at the end of the match was 29-0. 1998 also got them some major victories. The team got a record of 12-1 win season. In the Holiday Bowl they defeated the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The Wildcats ranked an impressive 3rd then at the national level. They even ranked 2nd in some polls. However once they had one major loss which made them loose and finish second in the Pac 10.
