The History of the Sun Devils
The Arizona State Sun Devils Football team was initially a nick name for the team which was used back in 1946. The teams also had other nicknames like the Owls, Normals and later on were called the bulldogs. The name 'Sun Devils' was suggested in a news paper. The writer suggested the name for the team and gradually the name caught on. Even the mascot of the Sun Devils, Sparky, was designed by a Disney illustrator called Bert Anthony.
The State University of Arizona has about 9 male and 11 female sport teams competing in various NCAA Pacific Ten Conference divisions. The male teams compete in games like basketball, tennis, track, baseball, football, golf, cross country, swimming or diving and wrestling. The women sport teams compete in games like cross country, basketball, golf, soccer, gymnastics, softball, tennis, water polo, track, volleyball and swimming/diving . Their closest rivals are the University Of Arizona in football (different from Arizona StateUniversity).
