About the ACC Football Championship

The Atlantic Coast Conference or ACC was founded on 8th May, 1953, back at Sedgefield Inn, Greensboro, N.C. The ACC had seven chartered members, Duke, Clemson, North Carolina State, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina and Wake Forest. The conference was drawn and set up by laws. Up to 2003 the championship was won in round-robin regular-season play amongst all the members of the conference. But in some of the years the round robin was not used.

The ACC Football Championship league did not have tie breaking procedures like the use of head to head results or is a single champion mandatory thus many of the seasons would often end with 'co champions'. In 2004 there was an expansion and Miami and Virginia Tech were also included in the ACC. After this the round-robin play became impossible because of the NCAA limitations. According to them limitations were imposed on the number of games a team played during the season. The NCAA also forbade championship games if the league had only 11 members.
