Edmonton Oilers Background Information

The Oilers made it to the final of the 1982-83 Stanley Cup and performed well at the finals owing to a spectacular performance by goaltender Billy Smith. The 1983-84 season saw amazing records by The Edmonton Oilers, an unparalleled record for 446 NHL goals and a franchise record of 59 wins and 119 points. The Oilers won the 1984 Stanley Cup with Gretzky scoring his 100th season goal in the finals. They defeated Philadelphia Flyers in the 1985 Stanley Cup Final, with Paul Coffey and Jari Kurri making playoff scoring history and Gretzky winning the Smythe Trophy. In the 1985-86 season, Edmonton Oilers were awarded The President's Trophy.

Edmonton Oilers defeated The Boston Bruins in the 1987 Stanley Cup Finals. The 1988 Stanley Cup saw an invincible Edmonton Oilers, losing just two playoff games to win their fourth Stanley Cup. They defeated the Bruins again in 1990, claiming their fifth Stanley Cup. The thereafter weakened Oilers began reestablishing themselves as a strong team after 2005, and are still reckoned as one of the best teams in the history of ice hockey.
