History of the Avalanche

The Colorado Avalanche were formed as The Quebec Nordiques in the year 1972. The Nordiques won the Avco World Trophy in 1977, reaching the finals two years back in 1975. They entered the National Hockey League in 1979. The team was reorganized in Denver as The Colorado. The Avalanche won their very first game in 1995 against the Detroit Red Wings, starting their long rivalry with the team. Finishing the season with 47 wins and 104 points, they were placed second in the Western Conference. They went on to clinch the Stanley Cup, with Joe Sakic winning the Conn Smythe Trophy. They became the first team in history to win the cup in the very first year of their relocation.
