A Brief History of the Raiders
At the end of the 1962 season, Al Davis was hired as head coach and manager by Wayne Valley. He was just 33 and became the youngest in the history of professional football to be placed in those positions. Among the first things that he did was to change the team colors to black and silver. He also introduced an aggressive offensive strategy which he called the vertical game. He left the team briefly in 1966 and returned as manager and part owner having bought 10 percent of the team for $18,000. After a series of lawsuits Davies was able to shift the team to Los Angeles in 1982 and the name during this period was changed to the Los Angeles Raiders. They returned to Oakland in 1995 and resumed the use of their name, Oakland Raiders which they bear till date. They are now based in the McAfee Coliseum, Oakland.
The Oakland Raiders have won 4 League Championships, one AFL Championship in 1967 and 3 Super Bowl Champion trophies (1976, 1980 and 1983). They have two other Super Bowl appearances where they failed to win the title. They also have clinched 4 conference championships and 4 AFC titles, in 1976, 80, 83 and 2002. They won the divisional championships an impressive 15 time, AFL West 3 times and AFC 12 times.
