The History of the Jets
The team became a chartered member of the AFL in 1960 as the New York Titans. Sony werblin renamed the team after he bought it in 1963. After the NFL_AFL merger the New York Jets became part of the NFL. They first played home matches at the Polo Grounds but had poor crowd attendance. The team almost went bankrupt, saved by the intervention Werblin and Leon Hess. They bought the team from Wismar Harry, 13 March. 1964. Hess bought out his co-owners and retained ownership until he died. The team was then sold by his estate in 2002 to Robert Wood Johnson.
The New York Jets were the first team from AFL to defeat a club from NFL in an AFL/NFL Championship Game when they subdued Baltimore Colts to win Super Bowl III in 1968. They have also won 4 divisional championships. (AFC East in 1998, 2002, AFL East in 1968, 1969). They had won some titles apart from these prior to the AFL-NFL merger.
