Stevie Wonder (originally named Steveland Hardaway Judkins) was born in Saginaw, Michigan on May 13, 1950. As a premature baby he was placed in an incubator it is thought that he received excessive oxygen while incubated (not uncommon at the time), causing his blindness. His mother, Lula May Hardaway, made sure that Steveland was treated the same as any of her other children (Stevie had 5 sibling, 4 boys and 1 girl). She did not tolerate not either teasing or over-assisting him because of his blindness.
