After graduating from Belmont, wrote his first hit for David Kersh, entitled "Another You." He also would write hits for such established country acts as Tracy Byrd and David Ball and ink a major songwriting contract with EMI.

He signed his first major label contract as a singer in 1999 with Arista Nashville, and released the single "Who Needs Pictures." He made his first appearance at the Grand Ol' Opry that same year. In early 2000 Brad scored his first #1 song. The song was "He Didn't Have To Be", a deeply personal song about Lovelace's experiences with her stepson.

That year he also received his first Grammy nomination, for Best New Artist. He was inducted in 2001 into the Grand Ole Opry. He won his first CMA in 2002 for the video to "I'm Gonna Miss Her(The Fishin' Song)." The video featured cameos from Little Jimmy Dickens, ESPN's Dan Patrick, and talk show host Jerry Springer, and Brad's future wife, actress Kimberly Williams.

In 2003, Brad released his third album, "Mud On The Tires." Featuring the hit song "Celebrity", Brad parodied reality TV. He also included a new batch of celeb cameos, this time nabbing comic actors Jim Belushi and Jason Alexander, television acting legend and pop culture icon William Shatner, and the original "Bachlorette" Trista Rehn. The title track from the CD, went to #1 in 2004 and created a minor celebrity in "Mudgirl" Brenda Best from the songs music video.

In 2005 Brad toured with country legend Reba McEntire and singer Terri Clark and released a new album, entitled "Time Well Wasted." The album's 15 tracks produced the hits "When I Get Where I'm Going" with Dolly Parton, "Out in the Parking Lot" with Alan Jackson, "Cornography", and "Alcohol." The album would go on to win Best Album honors at that years CMA awards. Brad would also be nominated for 4 Grammys as well, including Best Country Album and Best Country Song.
