Carlos Mencia or Ned Arnel Mencia in real life was born on October 22, 1967 in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. His father was a Honduran named Roberto Holness, and his mother was a Mexican named Magdalena Mencia. At the time of his birth, his mother was engaged in a domestic dispute with his father which resulted in their separation.Carlos remained in the custody of his mother who refused to let Carlos use his father's kast name. But Carlos used his father's name anyway out of respect. Until he was 18 years old, Carlos Mencia was known as Ned Holness. Carlos was raised in a big family, being the 17th out of 18 children. He grew up in East Los Angeles, California, where he majored in electrical engineering at the California State University and it was during his college years he developed an interest in stand-up comedy after performing at an open mic night at the popular comedy venue in L.A. known as the Laugh Factory.
