Brief History of the Jazz

One of the seven teams in the Midwest division of the western conference, once called the New Orleans Jazz, joined the NBA as an expansion team in 1974. After 9 long seasons and one of the worst record ever posted by an NBA team, the team made the move from New Orleans to Salt Lake City. The team played its first game in Utah on October 12, 1979.

Once in Utah, the team continued to be a disappointment, led by general manager turned coach Frank Layden decided to compile a team made up with star players such as guard Darrell Griffith and later center Mark Eaton.
