About the Raptors

The Toronto Raptors represent one of the youngest team in the NBA, officially joining the ranks as part of an American expansion into Canada on September 30 1937. The franchise was granted as the 28th to a group run by John Bitove, a Canadian businessman.

The team broke typical tradition by putting the naming and color scheme to a nationwide vote as a demonstration of the national excitement over their newly formed basketball club. The final name was chosen from a list of over 2,000 animal oriented names, though the recently released, wildly popular Jurassic Park heavily influenced voters' decision, which was unveiled on May 15 1994.
