The Past of the Sixers

The 76ers have a long and prestigious career in the NBA ' dating back to 1939 as an independent professional team then known as the Syracuse Nationals. With seven other teams, they merged with the Basketball Association of America to form the NBA in 1949, and six years later they went on to win a national championship.

The then Nationals suffered a unique problem in the size of their city ' Syracuse, one of the last remaining medium cities, was simply not large enough to make any professional team profitable. As time went on and the financial lopsidedness continued, Iry Kosloff finally bought the team from Denny Biasone in 1963, and relocated the Nationals to the historic city of Philadelphia.
