Miami Heat: A Brief History
In the 1980's the league decided to add four new teams to the franchise line up. Florida who had no NBA teams decided that they would try to get a franchise in one of their cities. The league gave franchises to Orlando and Miami. During the 1988-89 season Miami along with the Charlotte Hornets, Minnesota Timberwolves and Orlando Magic all made their first season debut.
Miami chose their first coach, Ron Rothstein, and a group of young inexperienced players, who played a terrible first season, where they finished the first season with the leagues worst record. Next the team Moved into the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference, where the Heat continued to struggle. At the end of the 1989-90 seasons, the Heat would see the resignation of their coach.
The Heat would hire Kevin Loughery prior to the 1991-92 season, they would also add guard, Steve Smith, who with the help of more experienced players the Heat made it to fourth place. After the 1993-94 seasons, one of the Heat players, Steve Smith was selected to play on the second Dream Team who competed at the 1994 FIBA World Championship as Team USA.
