About the Pacers
To its earliest beginnings in 1967 as a franchise in the American Basketball Association, the Pacers acquired their name over night. With its debut in the 1967-1968 season, the Pacers spent the next seven years as the State Fairgrounds as home. Considered the most successful team in ABA history, the Indiana Pacers would go on to win three championships in four years. In 1974, the Pacers moved to the Market Square Arena which became home until the Conseco Field House was completed in 1999.
As the ABA folded in 1976, the Pacers were invited to join the NBA. Already experiencing financial woes, and selling off star players, it looked bleak that they would be able to afford the cost. Hanging on by a thread financially, with threat of team sale and a 16.5 hour ticket sale-a-thon, the NBA announced its newest league team, the Indiana Pacers. Despite community support, Indiana continued to struggle for the next 13 years.
