Denver Nuggets Background Info

In the 80's, the Nuggets regularly scored over 115 points per game. From 1981-1982, every game included 100 more points scored by the team. They went on to play the Detroit Pistons scoring a record high of 370 combined points. Detroit ultimately won that game in triple overtime with a super-close 186-184 final score.

The Nuggets made the finals in the Western Conference but lost to the L.A. Lakers in a five game stint.

Kicking off the 90's marked a slight turn for the worse in Nuggets' history. Early in the decade, they were dubbed the "Enver Nuggets" (note the lack of a "D") after scoring the worst league record for two consecutive seasons, and setting records as well for number of points surrendered.

Things showed promise, however, in 1992 when the Nuggets new addition Dikembe Mutumbo was named rookie of the year for that season. Despite this, the team still only managed to finish out the '92 season at 24-58.

In the 1993-1994 seasons, the Nuggets secured the 8th seed in the playoffs at the Western Conference. They took on the top team, the Seattle Supersonics, and made NBA history by defeating the Supersonics 98-94 in a heated overtime sequence.

This was the first time in the NBA's playoff history that a 1st seeded team was conquered by an 8th seeded team. In the second round, they were not so victorious, losing game seven of the second round to the Utah Jazz.

The Denver Nuggets struggled from 1995-1998, with numerous losses and very few wins due to high player and coach turnover and serious player injuries sustained.
