A Brief History of the Mavericks

In 1979, Don Carter brought NBA basketball back to Dallas. A city that was raised on good manners, they have waited too long. It is time to reward their patience. As the 1980-81 season begins to start, its official. They will call the team the Mavericks, after the TV show. It seemed befitting since James Garner was part of the ownership. Dick Motta is hired as the coach. Known as a great teacher, his strict reputation seemed a good beginning for the team. While the team's first game was a triumph the season would end 6-40. The only positive thing for Dallas was the addition of Brad Davis to the team.
