Background on the Hawks

Located in the Eastern Division of the Southeast Conference, the Atlanta Hawks are one of the oldest teams. Initially a part of the NBA, they began playing in 1946 and from the very start they were faced with constant movement. Upon merging with the NBL, they had beginning success as when they reached the playoffs in the first year. This was short lived as the following year they failed to qualify postseason due to draft issues with Bob Cousy.

This caused the team to pull up roots and relocate to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1951 where they had little success in winning. Feeling things would be better, the team once again moved in 1955 where they climbed to their only NBL Championship in 1958.
