The Mariners played their first game on April 6, 977 to a sold-out crowd of 57,762 at the Kingdome, losing 7-0 to the California Angels. The Mariners of the 1970s and 1980s, despite having such stars as Gaylord Perry (nicknamed by fans the Ancient Mariner), Harold Reynolds (two-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove winner), Mark Langston (three-time American League strikeout leader) seemed to be a non-achievement, dilettante team showing poor performances and losing records. However, a new rookie center fielder Ken Griffey, Jr by his brilliant game (acquired in1987 amateur draft) in 1989 gave fans a hope that a chain of fortunes might be not so far.
