The Giants again avoided elimination from playoff contention until the final weekend of the season in 2001. The team finished two games behind the division-winning Los Angeles Dodgers. The Giants' 2005 season was the team's least successful. The Giants held a celebration in honor of Baseball Hall of Famer Juan Marichal in 2005. The franchise won their 10,000th contest defeating their long-time rivals in summer 2005. The Giants were officially eliminated from the NL West race in 2005, the team finished the season in third place. Their record was of 75'87 and then the Giants were expected to contend in 2006, but the team lost in extra innings.
