The history of the Pirates started with the American Association in 1882, whose member the team were at that time. The home of the team was Allegheny City located across the Allegheny River from Pittsburgh, and the team's name was Allegheny or Alleghenys. In 1887, the Allegheny Club was transferred to the National League, and the team changed their name for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Thus, in 1887, the Pittsburgh Pirates were established. The team are also nicknamed as the Bucs and the Buccos.
