The team's name originates from the late 19th century athletic clubs, specifically, the Athletic of Philadelphia. The Athletics are also nicknamed the A's, as the White Elephants or simply the Elephants. The latter is used in reference to then New York Giants' manager John McGraw's, who called the team a white elephant.
