The New York Yankees were one of the original eight charter franchises of Major League Baseball. Originally founded in Baltimore Maryland and named the Baltimore Orioles, they were moved to New York and were known as the New York Highlanders. They started using the Yankees name in 1913.

In a 2002 interview with the New York Times Boston Red Sox president Larry Lucchino surnamed them the Evil Empire (Ronald Reagan's words about the former Soviet Union). Nthey were dubbed this name because of owner George Steinbrenner's habit of paying an obscene amount of money for their players and making them all well groomed with no facial hairs.
