Kansas City Royals in Action!
The Kansas City Royals, based in Kansas City, Missouri, play in the Central Division of Major League Baseball's American League. The name of the team the Royals originates from the American Royal Livestock Show, which was popular in Kansas City since 1899.
The Royals took off playing in Kansas City in 1969 and their inaugural game, on April 8, 1969, finished up with the victory of the Royals over the Minnesota Twins 4-3 in 12 innings. The team improved their records of successful playing very quickly with the help of a number of good trades initiated by its first General Manager, Cedric Tallis. That included a trade for Lou Piniella. At that time, the Royals had a range of quite promising players on board, including pitchers Paul Splittorff and Steve Busby, infielders George Brett and Frank White, and outfielder Al Cowens.
