Houston Astros Baseball Information

On October 1, the Houston Astros were the last remaining team that still had a chance to reach the 2006 postseason. Consequently, the team was the final Major League Baseball team to be officially eliminated from playoff contention.

After losing the WS in 2005, the Houston Astros prepared for the offseason. The club signed Preston Wilson and moved Lance Berkman to1B, ending the long tenure by Jeff Bagwell due to injuries. The Houston Astros resigned P Roger Clemens. In summer, the Houston Astros traded two minor league prospects to the Devil Rays for hitter Aubrey Huff and cash. After a dramatic last 2 weeks of the 2005 season, including a 4-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals, the Houston Astros didn't get to the playoffs losing their last match to the Atlanta Braves, 3-1. The Houston Astros were within a 1/2 game of the St. Louis Cardinals on September 28, but that is as close as the 2005 National League Champions would get.

The Astros' 2007 season started with the club trying to take the National League Central title back from the WS winners, the St. Louis Cardinals, after they won it last season. Now, the Astros will have to do so without Jeff Bagwell, who retired after the Houston Astros declined option on his deal for 2007, as well as Andy Pettitte and future hall of Famer Roger Clemens. To make up for losing the key players, the club signed pitcher Woody Williams, and traded with the Rockies for Jason Jennings, and Miguel Asencio.

In November 2007, the Houston Astros acquired outfielder Michael Bourn, 3B Michael Costanzo, and reliever Geoff Geary from the Phillies in exchange for RHP Brad Lidge and INF Eric Bruntlett. This announcement was made by the Houston Astros GM Ed Wade.
