Baltimore Orioles Background Information
The Baltimore Orioles, based in Baltimore, Maryland, are a member of the MLB's Eastern Division, American League. The team was established in 1901, and has had its headquarters in Baltimore since 1954. The name of the team originates from the name of the songbird 'Oriole', having a long pointed bill and a mostly yellow-and-black plumage.
The modern Orioles franchise traces its roots back to the original Milwaukee Brewers of the minor Western League, beginning in 1894 when the league reorganized. However, most notable moments in the history of the Baltimore Orioles started from 1954 - the first season of the modern Orioles. On April 15, 1954, the streets were jammed by thousands of Baltimoreans who were watching the Orioles going from downtown to their new home at Memorial Stadium. More than 46,000 witnessed the Orioles winning their home opener in the struggle against the Chicago White Sox, and moving into first place in the American League. Whatever ironic it might seem, the Orioles lost their last game of the season to the same White Sox with 11-0, finishing off with 100 losses and 57½ games out of first place.
